Interactive Exhibits Our Visitor Center features a range of interactive exhibits that showcase the rich biodiversity and history of the Ohio River Islands. Learn about the unique ecosystems, the diverse wildlife, and the conservation efforts that help protect this vital habitat.  Notable exhibits include:

Native Mussel Tank In the lobby, you’ll find a fascinating native mussel tank. This exhibit provides a close-up look at these remarkable filter feeders and their crucial role in maintaining water quality in the Ohio River.

River Life Aquarium In the exhibits area, there is a huge 1,200 gal aquarium filled with large native fish species like catfish, long-nose gar and bass. Watch in awe as these magnificent creatures swim gracefully, showcasing the aquatic life that thrives in the river.

Historical Displays Explore the history of human interaction with the islands, from prehistory to the present day. Learn about the use of mussels for making buttons and other industrial uses of the river. These displays provide a fascinating glimpse into how the river and its resources have shaped local communities over time.

Native Bird and Mussel ID Discover the diverse bird and mussel species that call the refuge home. The informative displays highlight the various native animals, their habitats, and their importance to the ecosystem.

Turtle Tanks Don’t miss the turtle tanks, where you can observe a musk and soft shell turtles up close. Learn about their habitats, behavior, and conservation efforts to protect them.

Plan Your Visit

Hours of Operation The Visitor Center is open from 8am to 4:30pm Monday-Saturday, providing ample opportunity for you to explore and enjoy. During the summer, the center is open on Sundays and federal holidays.

Location The Visitor Center is located at 3982 Waverly Rd, two miles outside of Williamstown, WV and offers easy access to the refuge’s trails and recreational areas. Ample parking is available for your convenience.

Facilities The Visitor Center is equipped with modern facilities to make your visit comfortable and enjoyable. Enjoy the picnic area, restrooms, and the Friends gift shop featuring nature-themed merchandise.

Wildlife Viewing The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge is home to a variety of wildlife species. A bird viewing area filled with feeders  provide excellent opportunities to be closer acquainted with these feathered friends.

Fishing  Fishing enthusiasts will love the fishing pier located on the river just beyond the Visitor Center. Situated amidst the serene beauty of the refuge, this accessible spot provides a perfect setting for a relaxing day of fishing just a short walk or drive from the Visitor Center.

Whether you’re an experienced angler or a beginner, the Ohio River offers a variety of fish species, including bass, catfish, and more. The tranquil environment and abundant wildlife make it an ideal location for both fishing and enjoying nature.
