For generations, the islands of the Ohio River have inspired imagination. In their wild form, they conjure images of Huckleberry Finn’s adventures or echo the struggles of local tribes. Through the industrial era, it may have seemed that the opportunity to experience these wild islands had passed forever. But now, as nature reclaims these small jewels, it is possible once again to immerse yourself in the rich natural splendor and explore the islands of the great Ohio River.

What to Expect:

  • Island Exploration: Paddle to the islands and discover the unique ecosystems of the Ohio River Islands. Hike through lush forests, observe wildlife, and breathe in the fresh river air. Up for a challenge? Complete the Kayak Challenge by visiting each 20 different islands, taking a picture to prove your accomplishment.
  • Educational Exhibits: At our Visitor Center, explore exhibits describing how mussels live (and use fish to help them reproduce!) as well as displays about other local wildlife, and historic uses of the Ohio River, it mussels and islands. Don’t miss the amazing 1200-gallon aquarium featuring native fish of the Ohio River and get close to live mussels in the unique freshwater mussel tank.
  • Guided Tours: Join our knowledgeable guides for island tours. Learn about the refuge’s history, conservation efforts, and the fascinating species that call these islands home.
  • Picnic Areas: Pack a picnic and enjoy the serene surroundings. The islands provide a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
